21.04.14 21:56<zmooc>It's cheaper, more effective and more energy-efficient to separate these things mechanically. There is no good reason to manually separate these things apart from helping misguided idiots feel good about themselves:p
21.04.14 23:37<NOlifeFIN>suomeksi?
22.04.14 00:40<FelixChaus>Koneellinen erottelu/lajittelu on tehokkaampaa.
22.04.14 09:54<pallea>I'll be impressed if there is a machine that can sort out that mess. some lazy guy just didn't bother to put the bags in the bin.
22.04.14 10:52<hartikainen><zmooc> That's bullshit. First of all mechanically shredded waste is of worse quality => incineration leads to higher emissions and environmental impacts and lower energy efficiency. Secondly, mechanical shredding costs more.
22.04.14 10:54<hartikainen>Thirdly, burning of mechanically shredded waste costs more than buring of separate collected waste. Fourth point is that separate collection reduces the amount of landfill waste as the amount of shredding residues is smaller.
22.04.14 10:55<hartikainen>The only reason why mechanical shredding makes sense in some cases is that there is no infrastructure in some countries and areas that support more sophisticated waste management methods. If there is, mechanical shredding is a bad option.
22.04.14 10:58<hartikainen>For references see e.g.: Reports of Finnish Environment Institute 12/2006, Reports of the Finnish Environment Institute 28/2008
22.04.14 17:46<joulukka>jälkikäteen on paha erotella kierrätyspaperia, jos kippaat samaan astiaan paperit ja biojätteet
22.04.14 22:26<zmooc>@hartaikainen FEI 28/2008 refers to the 2006 research. We're 8 years further now and have made great progress in cleaning and separating plastics from other waste using technologies that were not available when that research was completed.
23.04.14 05:48<hartikainen><zmooc> I challenge you to provide any evidence beyond vague arguments to support your original claim. Now you're also only talking about plastics. Theres also paper in the trash, which is pretty much ruined when its wetted with bio waste.
23.04.14 05:50<hartikainen>And you're also neglecting very basic physics: manual separation is free in terms of money and energy when done at source using combined collection vehicles. Mechanical separation, which is de facto shredding, always comes with added cost and energy.
23.04.14 05:52<hartikainen>If we were even overly optimistic and said that some one has developed a separation method which breaks the laws of physics and economy, it would still be far from being in widespred use. Waste management is a very conservative business...
23.04.14 05:54<hartikainen>...and just about to implement over 20 years old inventions (e.g. gasification and pyrolysis). So we have to wait quite long untill anything developed after 2008 is de facto.
23.04.14 13:47<pallea>not exactly related, but I found about a company called ZenRobotics. they have quite a fascinating construction waste sorting robot based on artificial intelligence (search zenrobotics on youtube). the future looks quite interesting.
